Preparing for the Upcoming Winter Storm

A Helpful Guide for Hickory, NC & Surrounding Communities

As colder temperatures and the potential for winter weather move into Hickory and the surrounding areas this weekend, we wanted to take a moment to check in and share a few helpful reminders. At True North Realty, our role in the community goes far beyond real estate—we care deeply about the safety, comfort, and well-being of our neighbors.

Winter storms can be unpredictable, but a little preparation now can go a long way in keeping your household safe and stress-free.

Prepare for Possible Power Outages

Harsh weather can sometimes lead to power outages, especially with ice or heavy snow. Consider preparing the following ahead of time:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries (avoid relying solely on candles)
  • Fully charged phones and portable battery packs
  • A battery-powered radio to stay updated on local weather alerts
  • Extra blankets, warm clothing, hats, and gloves for indoor warmth
  • If you use medical devices that require power, make backup plans now

Stock Up on Essentials

Before the storm arrives, it’s a good idea to have a few days’ worth of essentials on hand:

  • Bottled water and non-perishable food items
  • Easy-to-prepare meals that don’t require electricity
  • Baby supplies, pet food, and medications
  • Paper products and basic hygiene items

Protect Your Home

Cold temperatures can be tough on homes, especially older systems. A few preventative steps can help avoid issues:

  • Let faucets drip slightly to help prevent frozen pipes
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
  • Make sure outdoor hoses are disconnected
  • Check that your heating system is working properly
  • Bring outdoor furniture, plants, and decorations inside or secure them

Stay Safe on the Roads

If conditions worsen, travel may become hazardous:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during icy or snowy conditions
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car (blanket, water, flashlight, snacks)
  • Allow extra time if you must be out and drive slowly

Check on Neighbors & Loved Ones

Community is everything—especially during weather events like this. If you’re able, consider checking in on elderly neighbors, friends, or anyone who may need extra support.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on local conditions and share updates as needed. For the most current information, follow local weather sources and community announcements.

From all of us at True North Realty, please stay safe, stay warm, and know that we’re thinking of you this weekend. If there’s anything we can do to help or if you have real estate-related questions during this time, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We’re grateful to be part of such a strong and caring community. 💙
